Projects
EU Neighbourhood, Foreign and Security Policy
This unit of CEPS has been extending its interests progressively since 1999 when it was triggered into activity by the war over Kosovo. There followed other projects concerning conflict regions in the European neighbourhood in the several years that followed: the Balkans, Cyprus, Caucasus, Middle East. In 2005 the European neighbourhood was initiated, and there has been a continuous stream of projects concerning EU policy towards East Europe, Russia, Central Asia and the South Mediterranean, and thematic studies concerning for example democracy and political Islam, and aspects of strategic security. More recently the agenda has been moving into issues of global governance.
The Unit is headed by Michael Emerson, and has become a hub for many visiting scholars from all of the wider European neighbourhood and now increasingly from Asia also.
The Unit covers 5 topics:
Strategic Security
Russia and the Eastern Neighbours
Southern Neighbours & Islam and Europe
Western Balkans, Accession States & the EEA
Central Asia
The Unit also produces a monthly newsletter.
